Report of Community Health Fair, June 10, 2007

To promote better health practices in the community, the Asian Pacific Health Center joined forces with the UCSD Vietnamese Professional Health Organization (VPhO) to organize a comprehensive Health Fair at the offices of the Vietnamese Federation of San Diego on June 10, 2007. Members of the Vietnamese Physicians Association in San Diego, the San Diego Vietnamese Pharmacists Association and Dentists in San Diego also collaborated in the event.
A large group of over 15 physicians, pharmacists, dentists, 12 medical and pharmacy students, and a strong contingent of volunteers contributed their efforts on that day, starting at 9:00 AM. One hundred thirty five (135) persons registered for the free health services offered on the premises.

Results are tabulated in the Excel sheets, and detailed as follows:

I. BLOOD PRESSURE SCREENINGS
30 men and 44 women (74 in total) had their blood pressure checked manually, mostly on both arms. See Attachment 1.

The age range was from 15 to 76. People with SBP 120-130 mmHg or DBP 80-89 mmHg are considered "Pre-hypertensive" and need healthy lifestyle modifications to prevent progressive rise in blood pressure and cardiovascular diseases. People having SBP with 20 mmHg above normal, or DBP with 10mmHg above normal need therapy. These patients were counseled to return to their regular physicians for further management.

II. BLOOD GLUCOSE SCREENINGS
25 men and 38 women (63 in total) got finger prick screenings. 52 (83%) were fasting, and 10 (16%) were non fasting. See Attachment 2.

The finger prick test is not a diagnostic procedure. For better accuracy, the fasting plasma glucose test is the preferred test. Results equal or above 126 are considered diabetic for the patient.

III. BONE DENSITOMETRY
16 men and 47 women (63 in total) went through the ankle bone densitometry testings. Eligibility was above 50 for women and above 60 for men and high risk individuals, e.g. on medications such as glucocorticoids. Results were tabulated based on the T-score: See Attachment 3.

Patients were counseled by the physicians on the spot.

IV. BLOOD TRIGLYCERIDES AND CHOLESTEROL
50 men and 57 women (106 in total) got lipid panel testings, which comprise Triglycerides, total cholesterol, HDL cholesterol and LDL cholesterol. The cholesterol/HDL ratio was also calculated by the laboratories. Results are given in Attachment 4.

A. Triglycerides
B. Cholesterol
C. HDL
D. LDL
The LDL desirable range is <100 mg/dL for patients with CHD or diabetes, and <70 mg/dL for diabetic patients with known heart disease.

E. The calculated Cholesterol/HDL ratio gives the overall status for the patient

So several factors are computed in the equation before deciding if a patient has high cholesterol in the blood or needs disease management.

V. HEPATITIS B SCREENINGS
43 men and 55 women (98 in total) were screened. The survey questions were based on the ones agreed by the American Liver Foundation, so that we can incorporate the findings in the previous data base. See Attachment 5.

Two tests were used: HBsAg and HBsAb.
When combined with the results obtained at the Hepatitis B screening on April 1, 2007, the findings were as follows:

Results of Hepatitis B Screenings In San Diego (2007)

Date Location Number screened Case 1 Case 2 Case 3
Apr. 1, 2007 Quantum Adult Center
54
13 (24%) 33 (61%) 8 (14.8%)
June 10, 2007 Vietnamese Federation
98
40 (41%) 50 (51%) 8 (8%)
cumulative results
152
53 (27%) 83 (55%) 16 (11%)

The overall percentage of positive patients (11%) for the Asian population in San Diego falls in the range of 7 -16 % of the general population as mentioned in the literature. As more Hepatitis B screening sessions are planned by the Herald Cancer Center in collaboration with the APHC in the next months, and at the annual APHC Health Fair on October 20, 2007, the number of persons screened will be substantially increased, generating even more significant results.

VII. MEDICAL PRESENTATIONS
During lunch time, Dr Trang Nguyen presented on Breast Cancer and Dr Ton Tran spoke on Hepatitis B in the Asian population. A lively questions and answers session followed. At adjoining tables, UCSD pharmacy students gave information on heartburn to the health fair attendees.

VIII. RAFFLES AND ADJOURNMENT
Many raffle prizes were given to attendees and participants. Food was plentiful. The fair was ended at 2 PM, leaving a sense of accomplishment to all who have volunteered their time and expertise to help the community. An optometrist, Dr. Tracy Nguyen, whose office is not too far from the health fair site asked to be informed of the next events.

We thank all the sponsors and participants who helped make the Health Fair a successful event year after year.
