Annual Community Health Fair, Sept. 30, 2006

The Asian Pacific Health Center 5th Annual Community Health Fair was organized in the parking lot in front of the Center on September 30, 2006, one month after the Back-to-school event took place in the same University Square Mall in East San Diego.

At 8:00 AM, John Nguyen, Health Fair coordinator, and the crew from Community Health Group came to set up the tents, along with the workers from the rental company. Booths were delineated in order, starting with the registration table nearest to the University Avenue. More than 150 persons attended the Health Fair on that bright Saturday morning.

Patients began to line up half-an-hour before 10:00 AM, time when the Fair officially opened. After much planning over the past months, the traffic of patients was finalized to allow smooth flowing between the services outdoors such as blood pressure measurements, diabetes and asthma screenings, and the indoor screenings for Hepatitis B and bone densitometry. Students from UCSD Medical School and pharmacists in the community volunteered their services at the different stations. Dr Hiep Nguyen, an Internal and Geriatric specialist gave free consultations to patients upon completion of the tests. Dr Ton Tran oversaw the operations in the APHC clinic.

At 12:00 PM, lunch including fruits was served to all attendees, complemented with salads and cookies donated by nearby Hometown Buffet. Discount coupons and prizes were also given away. The following tests were performed:

The Health Fair was ended at 2:00 PM. The general atmosphere was enjoyable, accentuated by lively Latino music, ample refreshments and lots of raffle prizes.
