Breast Cancer Early Detection
Report of outreach on Oct. 28, 2007

An outreach on Breast Cancer Early Detection was held on Sunday October 28, 2007 at the Wesley United Methodist Church in San Diego. The event was announced at the end of the services for the past two weeks. By an exceptional opportunity, one day before the event, Binh Tran was invited to the installation celebration of the two ministers Rev Toan Le and Tho Pham. After the beautiful and distinctive ceremony, Binh got introduced to the women committee members during the reception afterwards.

Twelve persons attended the presentation in the Wesley Hall. Mrs. Trang Le, on behalf of the women group’s chairperson who had another commitment, thanked the organizing committee for bringing the speakers to discuss on this important health issue for the community in San Diego.

The first speaker, Kristyn Caetano, Health Educator at the Scripps Health Cancer Center gave an overview of the Cancer Detection Program (CDP). Dr. Ton Tran, Medical Director at the Asian Pacific Health Center, discussed on the occurrence of breast cancer in the Asian population, its signs and symptoms, detection and management of the disease. Questions and answers followed. Thereafter, Binh Tran, Executive Director, spoke on the eligibility criteria for acceptance into the CPD program. Specific questions can be addressed to Lani Chau, Case Manager. Lastly, all were encouraged to join the Komen Race for the Cure, the annual fundraising event which will take place on December 2nd in Balboa Park. Please contact 619-582-2360 for registration.

Refreshments were served during the presentation. Among the attendees was the spouse of Rev. Duong Le, one of the seven ministers at the church.

It was a nice outreach session, almost individualized to the needs of the 12 women present who were interested in learning about this potential health issue in the Asian community.

Our special thanks to:
Rev. Dr Bau Dang, Senior Pastor
Rev. Toan Le, Minister of Administration & Small Groups Ministry
Mrs. Vuong Minh Thanh, of the Women’s committee
for authorizing and announcing this program to the members after the Sunday services.

We hope to be able to reach many more women in the congregation, and spread the word in the Vietnamese Community in San Diego.
