Breast Cancer Outreach, Sept. 30, 2007

The Asian Pacific Health Center cooperated with the California Cancer Detection Program in an outreach event on September 30, 2007 at the Vietnamese Seventh Day Adventist Church in San Diego. The event was called on only a couple of weeks ago.

Early on that day, a team of members were at their posts to provide help in setting up the display table and fine-tuning the audio-visual equipment. At 11:00 AM, Mr. Nghiep Le, Assistant Minister, welcomed the attendees and stressed on the need of early cancer detection for all. Kristyn Caetano, CDP Health Educator, presented an update of the state program, utilizing sharp Power-point slides. Dr Trang Nguyen, physician from the Union of Pan Asian Communities, spoke on the medical aspects of breast cancer, explaining the differences between the diagnostic methods. Binh Tran from the APHC informed on the eligibility criteria: over 40 years of age, without health insurance, and having a low income. Children, if present, must be under 20 years of age to be counted in the household.

Questions and answers followed, reflecting the interest of members concerning breast cancer detection and prevention. A group picture was taken of all attendees, before refreshments were served in the room adjoining the auditorium.

It was a nice meeting for members of the church, the staff at APHC and all participants. Lani and Mimi came in early to help with the registration of attendees. We thank Mr. Nghiep for giving a tour of the church, which was recently moved from a previous location. He mentioned that we could use several rooms upstairs to hold breakout clinical sessions after the presentation to the general audience. Dual - topic meetings on breast cancer and diabetes or Hepatitis B presented in English and Vietnamese will draw more members from all patient groups.

We thank the grant sponsor, San Diego Komen For the Cure, the excellent presenters and all the participants at the outreach activity, and look forward to more events in the next few months, incorporating the suggested items.
