Medicare Part D Outreach on 2-17-08

The Follow-up Medicare Part D session was conducted at the offices of the Vietnamese Federation of San Diego (VFSD) on Linda Vista Road on 2-17-08. The event occurred one week after the Tet Celebration, so the decorations for the New Year gave a nice setting to the workshop.

At 9:00 AM, preceptors and student pharmacist Vy Tran and friend were present to hang the banner at the entrance, and set the registration and refreshment tables. Several members of the VFSD were already on site, helping with logistics.

Sally Smith and Jag Rai gave guidelines to the students: Vy Tran, Diem Nguyen, Helen Le, Andrea Backes and Daisy Chang when working with the patients.

As patients came, they were asked to fill out a one-page information sheet, and directed to the front room where the review of Medicare Part D status was performed.

Although the number was not as large as seen at the last December session, there are clear advantages to a smaller group: more time was devoted to each patient, and there were more opportunities to ask and answer questions.



The 12 patients or so were very appreciative of the services rendered, and most asked the names of contacts for further questions. One patient needs to be enrolled in the Medi-Cal as well as Medi-care program. Diem will work with him at the Asian Pacific Health Center later in the week. Another patient said: “Now I can sleep with peace of mind”. She decidedly scored a 10 on the question: “How worried are you about the cost of your medication”! One new feature was found of great need to patients: The Health Net Seniority Amber II will provide transportation to patients to see their doctors.

Depending on the needs, another session may occur in May of this year, and a major one will be held in November or December of this year.
