Breast & Colorectal Cancer Prevention Outreach, Oct. 18, 2008

About 25 persons attended the outreach event at Linda Vista Recreation Center on October 18, 2008, on the topic of Breast Cancer and Colon cancer early detection in the Asian Community, presented by Drs Trang Nguyen, Hiep Nguyen and Binh Tran. The very spacious center is located at the end of Levant Street, across from the County Children's Services Building, in a large area reserved for sports and recreation for the residents, shaded by eucalyptus trees.

The audience was attendees of the Tai Chi classes which were held each week from 10:30 AM to 12:30 PM, and persons who came specifically for the outreach. Questions were asked on foods that may prevent the occurrence of cancer, the chances of getting colon cancer if one has liver cancer, and other types of cancer. The vegetarian lunch served before the presentations did prepare the attendees for a talk on ways to curb cancer. Even the naturally ripened and sweet persimmons from Mrs. Hien Ngo’s garden added a nice touch to the menu.

Our thanks to Dr Trang and Hiep Nguyen for their dedication to inform the community residents on early detection of breast and colon cancers. Future meetings will tackle cervical cancer and other types of cancers frequently encountered, on the request of Mrs. Hien Ngo, coordinator of the Tai Chi sessions in San Diego. Anh and Nhat who attended previous APHC Health Fair last June 2008 at the Vietnamese Federation of San Diego, helped greatly with the setting of the event. Pauline Limchaiyawat, UCSD medical student from APAMSA (American Pan Asian medical student association) attended the session, on the recommendation of Paula Tran. She followed the presentation from the English hand-outs, with Anh’s gracious translations of the live comments.
